MAC Clinical Research manages clinical trials for the pharmaceutical industry, and we are seeking to appoint a Legal Counsel or Contracts Manager to join our legal team and to make a positive impact in a world-leading Clinical Research Organisation.

We are open to candidates from junior to mid-senior level.

We are happy to be flexible with regards to location in the UK, so any of our clinical site locations in the North West may be considered with the option for home working for the right candidate.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to work within a team are essential.


  • Assist in development, review and negotiation of all types of commercial agreements such as Master Service Agreements, Clinical Trial Agreements, Confidentiality Agreements, Vendor Agreements, Change Orders, Consultancy Agreements and Service Agreements.

  • Review and draft supply contracts and terms and conditions.

  • Liaise with internal departments as needed for operational input on commercial agreements.

  • Ensure compliance with data protection legislation.

  • Provide legal support to internal departments as needed.

  • Finalise contracts, arranging signature and filing.

  • Assist with drafting, reviewing and updating contract templates as needed.

  • Assist with management of external advisors as appropriate.

  • Provide legal support (including administrative) to the department in respect of general legal, commercial and operational matters.

  • Carry out legal research/review of legal research.

  • Maintain relevant work trackers and provide regular updates to the business.

  • To assist the CLO with other matters as required.

  • Able to build and maintain professional relationships across the business.

  • Good communication skills.

  • Able to communicate complex legal issues and risks in terms that non-legal colleagues can understand.

  • Able to manage own workload.

  • Work to an ethical standard and in keeping with regulatory guidelines.

  • Keep updated with changes in legislation and case law and maintain continuing professional development.

  • To work according to MAC SOPs, guidelines and policies.

  • Maintenance of strict confidentiality of patient and business-related data.

  • To maintain a high level of initiative, integrity and personal responsibility, liaising appropriately with team members and managers to ensure the job role is efficiently carried out in accordance with relevant legislation.

  • To support the aims of MAC and to represent MAC appropriately in a professional way to all our customers.

  • Support junior members of the team as and when required.


  • Sound understanding of commercial law.

  • Excellent drafting and negotiation skills.

  • A minimum 3 years’ experience of reviewing commercial contracts/in-house legal experience.

  • Previous experience in CRO, Life Sciences or pharmaceutical industry would be advantageous.

  • Experience across several areas of law.

  • Experience of handling own matters.

  • Knowledge of UKGDPR and its application and experience in drafting, negotiating and advising on data processing agreements/data sharing agreements.

  • Knowledge and experience of using ABPI templates would be advantageous.

  • Research skills in order to obtain and review information and confirm a point of law/provide legal advice.

  • Advanced proficiency in working with Microsoft Word.

  • Proficiency in Excel, Adobe and PowerPoint.

  • Excellent communication and organisation skills with the ability to work on multiple projects and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Positive and proactive approach, including driving processes in a complex environment.

  • Experience of supervising and/or mentoring junior colleagues would be advantageous.
